One of the more complicated things a parent will face is how to respond and take action against a child that lies to them. There is no single answer to the problem, and this is something that every parent will face sooner or later. What can be done depends on the situation, but doing something is what really matters the most in the end.
When a little kid lies, sometimes it is because they really don't understand what they are doing or the results of their actions. This is true in many cases because they are still learning about life and life's rules, and they will grow out of this phase soon enough.

For the older ones, especially teenagers, they lie to get out of things or else to make you think that they are doing one thing when in fact they are doing something else. This is why it is important to not just deal with the lie, but you need to know what they lied about as well as why. This way you can address a bigger problem before it becomes a chronic concern.
A good example would be a kid who ditches school. It is a very bad habit to get into for a number of reasons, and chances are that you will not be equipped to handle it alone. So, talking to staff at the school can help you develop a game plan that will be successful.
Keeping an eye on them when they come home, as well as things they have in their room will clue you in on to weather or not they are shoplifiting, which is the other big reason for lying. This can be a big problem, and by questioning them about things will make it a habit that they will not enjoy getting into.
Sometimes it will be hard to tell if your child is shoplifiting, and maybe they aren't. But if you are convinced that they are bringing things home that don't belong to them, maybe talking to their teacher will help shed some light on the mystery. Ask if things are turning up missing in class, because that may be where your child is getting them from.
Finally, are you an honest person? Are you being a strong and good example for your children to look up to, or are they following in your footsteps with bad habits?
Lastly, look in the mirror and make sure that you set a good example for your kids to emulate and imitate. They need to have good things to look up to, so the more honorable you are, the better chance they have too.
